MEMS Robotics Team Advances to FLL State
Maxwell AFB | December 2, 2013
On November 16 Maxwell Elementary/Middle School"Just the RAYS" (Really Awesome Young Students) won the overall "Champions Award" in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) regional competition. Every September, FLL releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. The 2013-2014theme, Nature's Fury, challenges students to investigate a way To resolve a problem faced in natural disasters. In the 2013NATURE'S FURY Challenge, over 200,000 children ages 9-16* from over 70 countries will explore the awe-inspiring storms, quakes, waves, and more that we call natural disasters. Teams will generate innovative solutions for what can be done when intense natural events meet the places where people live, work, and play. There are three parts to the challenge, the Game, the Project and the FLL Core Values. FLL teams participate in the Challenge by programming robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology (Robot Game),developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project),all guided by the FLL Core Values.Teams explore an actual problem that today's scientists and engineers are trying to solve by applying real-world math and science concepts in developing an innovative solution to that problem, and share their findings. The Maxwell team interviewed representatives from the base emergency management team and FEMA as part of their hurricane project. On January 25, 2014 the Maxwell team will compete in the state level competition in Huntsville, AL. This is an exciting opportunity for team members to do real-world research toward the challenges facing today's doctors and scientists. The team also developed essential 21stCentury skills in critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity.
