With bright, smiling faces, the students of Delalio Elementary School aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River participated in Jump Rope for Heart during their gym classes, Feb. 13-14.

For more than 30 years the American Heart Association has held the jump roping event at schools across the nation every February, raising awareness of the importance of heart health.

The event is also used to raise money to help children who are born with heart conditions.

“The students look forward to this event every year,” said Samuel Jones Jr., Delalio Elementary health and fitness teacher. “It is also nice to teach them to care for each other as well as their communities.”

During the event the students learn a variety of jump roping skills and variations.

“We teach the kids the basics of jump roping both slow and fast,” said Jones. “Some of the students also learn advanced variations of jump roping skills such as double-dutch and learning to share one rope while two of them jump over in unison.”

This year Delalio Elementary raised more than $1,000 between online and in-person donations, all of which is given to the American Heart Association to further heart health awareness and education.

“We are all quite pleased with the outcome of this year’s Jump Rope for Heart,” said Regina Harper, Delalio Elementary School secretary. “We love having events such as this and getting the parents involved in what their students are doing. We like to show them not only what the students are doing, but why they are doing it and what they are learning from it. It is a really good way to keep the parents involved in the students schooling.”

If the students and their families wish to donate to the American Heart Association, they can do so through the website at http://www.heart.org.
