COURSE LENGTH: 36 weeks
Major Concepts/Content: The Focus English Language Arts course is designed to improve student skills in the areas of listening, speaking, writing, literature, and language appropriate for independent living. These skills include exploring and examining a variety of developmentally appropriate communication modes, and the importance each plays in daily living and employment. Communication modes include developing oral language skills used to communicate effectively in both formal and informal situations, simple forms of writing (e.g., telephone messages, completing applications, resume, and personal enjoyment), and functional reading skills for every day purposes.
Major Instructional Activities: Instructional activities include opportunities for practical application in natural settings (i.e., home, school, and community). Frequent opportunities to practice skills are available to reinforce skills with the goal of generalization to the regular education setting. Skills include development of non-verbal/gestural communication techniques, use of augmentative communication systems, and ability to comprehend and express emotions. Additional activities include writing, vocabulary development, word attack skills, reading/writing in daily activities, work place, and in leisure settings. Activities may require the student to be knowledgeable of the use of related technology, tools and equipment (i.e., computer software, communication device).
Major Evaluative Techniques: Students will be evaluated through informal and formal assessments. Multiple authentic assessments will be used as students perform, produce, and otherwise demonstrate skills both in the classroom and real life settings. This course may not be mastered in one year and students may earn multiple credits in this course.
Course Objectives: The essential objectives of Focus English Language Arts course are designed to facilitate learning outcomes appropriate to the instructional needs of each student. Instructional activities are based upon real world needs with the goal of increased independence and autonomy in his or her home and community.
