Mr. Chang Yu Selected as Principal of Daegu American Elementary
The Korea District Superintendent, Dr. Irby Miller, is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. Chang Yu as the new principal of Daegu American Elementary School at Camp Walker in Daegu, South Korea. Formerly a science teacher and now a seasoned administrator with more than a decade of hands-on experience, Mr. Yu will be moving to the Land of the Morning Calm from Houston, Texas, where he has most recently served as principal at Sharpstown International School, a 100% multicultural, grades 6-12, magnet school with a current enrollment of 1,008 in the Houston Independent School District (HISD).Mr. Yu is a proud alumnus of the University of Austin where he earned his B.S. in Science and the University of Houston where he majored in educational administration and received his master’s degree in education. Professional honors bestowed upon Mr. Yu throughout his career are numerous and include, but are not limited to: selection to establish and administer HISD’s first international studies-themed high school; creation of a partnership with the Asia Society organization to start the HISD International High School at Sharpstown; and being recognized, along with members of his faculty and staff, by the state of Texas for his school’s attainment of “exemplary campus” status, based on the students’ academic performance, which outpaced HISD and state averages, on the Texas Academic Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) state examinations.
Being engaged in the community via outreach programs and his own services as a volunteer are hallmarks of Mr. Yu’s career. In his free time, he enjoys traveling abroad, hiking, biking, and learning to play the guitar. A lovely daughter who is a first-year college student at the University of Houston; a son who is currently a senior at Sharpstown International School where Dr. Yu was the founding-principal; and another son who is a pre-schooler all fondly call him “Dad.”
The DoDDS-Korea district is delighted and truly honored to have Mr. Yu become a member of Leadership Team Korea.
