DoDEA Pacific teacher becomes state-level finalist in National awards program

A Department of Defense Education Activity Korea District teacher was recently selected as a state-level finalist in The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching—an honor reserved for the most distinguished mathematics and science teachers in the United States.

Allen named superintendent for the DoDEA Korea District

Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific Director Dr. Linda Curtis has named Dr. Judith Allen as the superintendent for the DoDEA Korea District. Allen is a career educator with extensive teaching and administrative experience. She joined DoDEA more than 30 years ago as a classroom teacher in Europe and went on to hold a number of positions of progressive responsibility before being selected as the assistant superintendent for the DoDEA Korea District in 2011.

More than 23,000 students and 3,000 professional educators and support staff returned to Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific schools Aug. 25-29 for the first week of the new school year.

Local Teacher Receives National Recognition

Zama AMS teacher Michael Pope selected as an NEH Summer Scholar

Mr. Michael A. Pope, a local teacher from Zama American Middle School, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of seventeen NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops. The National Endowment for the Humanities is a federal agency that each year supports summer study opportunities so that teachers can work with experts in humanities disciplines.

 Mr. Pope will participate in a workshop entitled "America's Atomic West." The one-week program will be held at Washington State University and is directed by Dr. Robert McCoy.

The 15 teachers selected in the program each receive a stipend to help cover their travel, study, and living expenses.

Topics for the seventeen NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops offered for teachers this summer include Abraham Lincoln, the American Revolution at The Henry Ford, Asian Pacific Americans in the Northwest, America's "Atomic West,", the California gold rush, the Cold War home front in southern California, Duke Ellington, Emily Dickinson, Gettysburg in history and memory, Mesa Verde National Park and Pueblo culture, the Missouri-Kansas border wars, the history and culture of the Mississippi delta, the San Francisco Bay Area home front in World War II, slavery in the colonial Chesapeake, and women's rights, religion, and abolition on the Rochester Reform Trail. The approximately 1,360 teachers who participate in these studies will teach more than 170,000 American students the following year.

While DoDEA Pacific encourages educators to pursue continuous professional growth and development opportunities, this scholarship program is not sponsored or endorsed by DoDEA or the Department of Defense.
