Zama American Middle School
Camp Zama, Japan | April 4, 2014
Mr. Michael A. Pope, a local teacher from Zama American Middle School, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of seventeen NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops. The National Endowment for the Humanities is a federal agency that each year supports summer study opportunities so that teachers can work with experts in humanities disciplines.
Mr. Pope will participate in a workshop entitled "America's Atomic West." The one-week program will be held at Washington State University and is directed by Dr. Robert McCoy.
The 15 teachers selected in the program each receive a stipend to help cover their travel, study, and living expenses.
Topics for the seventeen NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops offered for teachers this summer include Abraham Lincoln, the American Revolution at The Henry Ford, Asian Pacific Americans in the Northwest, America's "Atomic West,", the California gold rush, the Cold War home front in southern California, Duke Ellington, Emily Dickinson, Gettysburg in history and memory, Mesa Verde National Park and Pueblo culture, the Missouri-Kansas border wars, the history and culture of the Mississippi delta, the San Francisco Bay Area home front in World War II, slavery in the colonial Chesapeake, and women's rights, religion, and abolition on the Rochester Reform Trail. The approximately 1,360 teachers who participate in these studies will teach more than 170,000 American students the following year.
While DoDEA Pacific encourages educators to pursue continuous professional growth and development opportunities, this scholarship program is not sponsored or endorsed by DoDEA or the Department of Defense.
