Dr. (Courtney) Dennis Stewart joined DoDEA in 2021 as an Assessment and Accountability Instructional Systems Specialist in Europe West District. Prior to joining DoDEA, he was a program evaluation specialist for a large public school district in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Stewart began his career in education as a high school science and math teacher at an inner-city alternative school. After multiple years of teaching science in grades 6-12, he returned to school to earn a principal license and master's degree in School Leadership. He then worked as assistant principal, PLC Principal Academy assistant director, and an adjunct professor while completing his PhD in Educational Leadership. Afterwards he spent 10 years as an Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, University of Montana, and Utah State University, researching and teaching in Educational Administration programs supporting educators in becoming future school leaders. His research publications include professional learning communities, rural school leadership, and leading systemic change. In 2017 he received the University for Professional and Continuing Education Association National Teaching Excellence Award.

Dr. Stewart is from Utah but was raised in a military family, as his father was a career service Army officer, and attended multiple DoDEA schools as a child. He is excited to also raise his own family within a military connected community. He has been married to his wife Johanna for over 20 years and they have four children, Avery, Macel, Wilson and Wren. His wife is a science teacher and loves to work with students. As a family they enjoy traveling to warm beaches, steep mountains, and new places. They love to cook, play sports, listen to live music, and spend as much time as they can in nature.

Dr. Stewart is thrilled to join SHAPE High School and is excited to work with an amazing staff and student body.
