Dr. Sheila Benton
Biography
Dr. Sheila Benton joined W. T. Sampson Unit School in a new role as Assistant Principal in May of 2023. Â Previously she served military connected students as a Math Support Specialist and teacher at Kadena Elementary in Okinawa, Japan where she first joined DoDEA in 2019. Â Before DoDEA Dr. Benton served students in Title I Public Schools, teaching 4th, 5th, and Gifted and Talented while continuing to further her education and earning the honor of becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. Â Before teaching in public schools, Dr. Benton worked at an Independent School where she developed programs for three-year-olds, wrote curriculum, incorporated NAEYC practices, served as faculty representative for lower school and facilitated summer camp programs, growing them to include academic, athletic, and day camp opportunities. Â Experience prior to this included daycare director, developing preschool programs, and teaching preschool.
University of South Carolina – Coast is where Dr. Benton earned her bachelor's degree.  After several years she returned to college to earn a Master of Education, Education Specialist in Educational Leadership, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership.  As a student in high school these advanced degrees seemed impossible.   With work and determination Dr. Benton believes that every student can achieve what they want out of life.  Being a lifelong learner has opened so many opportunities to serve and grow students.
Dr. Benton is joined at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (NSGB) by her husband, Michael, and her fur babies Ren and Megumi (Golden Retrievers). Â She is the proud mother of two boys. She and her husband are excited about the water activities that NSGB has to offer such as diving, boating, and sailing. Â She is excited to become a Pirate at W.T. Sampson Unit School and is looking forward to a new adventure.
