Ms. Demetria Harvell
Biography
Ms. Harvell serves as the Assistant Principal of Special Education for Barsanti Elementary Elementary School. Before starting her career in education, Ms. Harvell worked with a non-profit agency as a Supported Employment Program Coordinator and radio producer. With a special interest in disability advocacy and school to work transition planning for students with disabilities, Ms. Harvell accepted an opportunity to work as a secondary Life Skills School to Work teacher. This experience led her to pursue a leadership role in special education compliance and monitoring for a State Education Agency with the Bureau of Exceptional Student Education as a Dispute Resolution Program Specialist and later Program Director. While in this role she provided general supervision and technical assistance to school districts on federal and state special education regulations.Â
Ms. Harvell is also a former textbook reviewer for Sage Publications and Florida State University Adjunct Instructor. Prior to joining Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), Ms. Harvell served as a Foreign Missionary in East Asia and helped establish a student learning support program for a private international school serving students from 56 different countries. After completing her missionary assignment and relocating, Ms. Harvell worked as a Corporate Trainer for a workforce development project.
During her career with DoDEA, Ms. Harvell has served as Child Study Committee Chair, elementary special education teacher, Special Education Assessor, and Acting School Administrator. Ms. Harvell is excited to join the Fort Campbell community and continue to serve military-connected students and families. She values school initiatives that support academic excellence, equal access to quality education for all students, family engagement, and community partnerships. Â
Ms. Harvell earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Oakwood University and Master’s degree from Alabama A&M University. She completed her Instructional Leadership Administration credentials from Troy University.  Ms. Harvell continued post-graduate studies at Harvard University and University of Alabama. She is member of Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa Education Honor Societies and Council for Exceptional Children. She enjoys taking road trips with family and friends and reading historical novels.
