Steven Cochran
Biography
Steven T. Cochran is a dedicated educational leader and administrator with over 30 years of experience fostering growth and innovation in school systems. Prior to working for DODEA Steven served as the Senior Director of Workforce Education and Multiple Pathways for Polk County Public Schools FL. In that role Steven was instrumental in expanding opportunities for students by increasing industry certifications and developing programs that align education with workforce demands. His efforts brought in millions of dollars in competitive grants, directly benefiting PCPS students and their futures.
Prior to being Senior Director Steven served in numerous educational leadership roles including lead teacher, resource specialist, senior coordinator and assistant director for Ridge Technical College in Winter Haven FL. Steven’s commitment to inclusive and transformative education was evident during his time as Principal of Summerlin Academy, a public military school in Bartow, Florida. Under his leadership, the school experienced significant growth in enrollment, while student graduation rates steadily increased. Steven prioritized fostering a supportive environment where students could thrive academically and develop as leaders, ensuring they were well-prepared for the next steps in their journeys.
Throughout his career, Steven has focused on building pathways to success for all students, particularly through innovative workforce development and community partnerships. His work reflects a deep belief in the power of education to create opportunity and change lives. Steven earned a BA from the University of Florida and has two advanced degrees in one in special education and the other in turnaround leadership from the University of South Florida.
In addition to his professional roles, Steven is a retired veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, where he served for 24 years and earned commendations for his service and instructional contributions. Steven has been engaged in the professional education community and has served in several organization including as Vice President of the Florida Career Pathway Network, and as a board member for Junior Achievement Polk, the National Career Academy Coalition and the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education. Steven’s life and work are dedicated to empowering individuals and strengthening communities through education and service.
His motto is borrowed from a unit he was attached to early in his military career: “Do What Has To Be Done”
