Dr. Julia C. Jones
The Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific West District is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Julia Jones as the district’s 2024 Teacher of the Year.
Dr. Jones teaches fifth grade at Humphreys Middle Schools, where she has taught for five years. She said she is humbled and honored to be named 2024 Pacific West District Teacher, noting it’s validation that her work in building positive relationships, establishing high expectations, and encouraging students to be critical thinkers is respected and appreciated.
“I chose to become a teacher to honor my mother, who taught in Jamaica prior to migrating to the United States,” Dr. Jones said. “Since her credentials were not recognized, she could not continue her career in education. In high school, I became a peer tutor and discovered that I love to help others learn.”
As a veteran and mother of military-connected children, Dr. Jones understands the opportunities and challenges that come with military life.
“I know how important it is for students to have a constant in their lives,” Dr. Jones said. “I only teach them for one year but feel that it is my responsibility to be that constant. Military-connected students deserve educators who understand their social, emotional and academic needs.”
Throughout her 22 years as an educator, Dr. Jones has filled numerous leadership roles, including Curriculum and Instruction Co-chair, Grade Level Chair, and Science Teacher Leader, among others.
Dr. Jones holds a doctorate in Leadership and Management from Saint Thomas University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in Reading Education from Fayetteville State University, and an Education Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Liberty University.
As the Pacific West District Teacher of the Year selectee, Dr. Jones will be considered for the 2024 DoDEA Teacher of the Year, which competes for National Teacher of the Year. All selectees will also attend the annual DoDEA Teacher of the Year Leadership Summit held at DoDEA Headquarters in September.
