DoDEA Pacific holds first in-person Far East esports event
OKINAWA – Eleven DoDEA Pacific high schools participated in the first-ever in-person Far East esports event Feb. 1-3 at the Schilling Community Center on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan.
The event saw teams of three face off in Rocket League, a game similar to soccer in which players work together to score a goal while driving cars, and Valorant, a game in which teams of five must eliminate all opposing competitors or deliver or prevent a team from planting a spike.
After many elimination rounds, Kadena High School and Humphreys High School finished on top in Rocket League and Valorant, respectively. Humphreys High School took second in Rocket League, with Guam High School placing third. In Valorant, Zama Middle High School placed second and Kadena High School placed third.
DoDEA Pacific esports is supported by USO Gaming and is a varsity athletic event offered during the winter season.
“This partnership with the USO has allowed us to offer a fun, engaging, and competitive esports athletic program at all of our high schools in the Pacific region,” said DoDEA Pacific Chief of Staff Todd Schlitz. “Esports is so much more than video games. These athletes are skilled and put in the work to improve their strategy, communication, problem solving and teamwork at practice to get to Far East.”
