Murray ES 1st Grade Class Celebrates Election Day!
On November 5, 2024, Dr. Morris's 1st-grade class at Murray Elementary School joined in the excitement of Election Day with a hands-on voting experience that introduced students to the election process. Through this creative activity, students learned valuable lessons in civics and citizenship by casting votes in a spirited election between Oreo and Chocolate Chip cookies.
To make this experience as authentic as possible, each student received a Voter's ID card and prepared by reading various books about voting and the importance of elections. They also created campaign posters, each promoting their favorite cookie, showing their creativity and enthusiasm for the process. Finally, students entered the Voting Booth one by one to cast their official ballots.
The day ended with the much-anticipated vote count. The excitement was palpable as the class tallied the ballots to see which cookie would come out on top. The winning cookie became the day's treat, bringing a delicious conclusion to an educational and memorable Election Day.
"Giving our first graders the opportunity to experience Election Day in a hands-on and engaging way helps them understand the importance of voting and having a voice," said Dr. Morris. "By casting their ballots and seeing the results, our students are not only learning about democracy but also experiencing the excitement of being part of a community decision. It's a lesson I hope they carry with them for years to come."
This experience provided the students with a firsthand understanding of voting, from campaigning to the thrill of election results, all within a fun, engaging environment at Fort Stewart Schools.
