From Plucking Strings to Duquesne University
Parents, teacher play instrumental role during student's journey

Every March, DoDEA celebrates Music in Our Schools Month to highlight music's crucial role in student achievement. This year's theme, "United Through Music," is exemplified by Michael's journey from a small California bed & breakfast to becoming a high school drum major and music scholarship recipient. Michael's parents nurtured his interest in the acoustic guitar from a young age. His musical path became clearer after moving to Camp Lejeune, where he met Mr. Tim Tyson, a dedicated music teacher with over 40 years of experience. Michael will attend Duquesne University next year to become a music teacher, supported by academic and music scholarships, which he attributes to his hard work and the support of his parents and music teacher.
