AGUADILLA, Puerto Rico — On Saturday, March 29, Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Americas Ramey Unit School’s Coding and Cybersecurity team, the Binary Bombers, emerged victorious at Lockheed Martin’s prestigious Cyber Quest Competition. Competing against 10 teams from across the island, the Binary Bombers showcased exceptional cybersecurity skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities to claim 1st place.

The annual competition challenges participants to tackle complex cybersecurity scenarios, testing their expertise in identifying vulnerabilities, protecting data, and managing cyber threats. The Binary Bombers—comprised of students Gabriel, Dante, and Daniella—faced a series of rigorous tasks that demanded both technical prowess and seamless collaboration. Their win reflects months of preparation and a commitment to mastering the growing field of cybersecurity.

“Our initial reaction was one of complete disbelief and then joy,” said Gabriel, four-year veteran of the coding and cybersecurity competitions. “A specific challenge we faced at the beginning involved collaboration and coordination between members of our team. Each member had a specific skill set and knowledge crucial to our success but performing well relied on our ability to collaborate and derive full benefit from what we each had to offer.”

Gabriel added that the team’s efficiency improved as the competition progressed, with members adapting to each other’s problem-solving styles. “Winning first place felt like an affirmation of the efforts I have made throughout the time that I have been involved and a really good way to close out my involvement in the Binary Bombers,” he said.

For Dante, the experience was equally rewarding. “Collaborating with my team was the most rewarding experience,” he said, emphasizing the group’s tight-knit dynamic.

Daniella, a newcomer to cybersecurity, discovered a passion she didn’t know she had. “This experience taught me that we need to talk to each other and know when to ask for help instead of struggling with no process by ourselves,” she said. “After winning, it made me want to apply to the internship program and discover more about the field and how I can use it in the future.”

The victory marks a proud moment for Ramey Unit School which continues to promote excellence in STEM education. The Binary Bombers’ success underscores the value of perseverance, teamwork, and dedication in the face of tough competition.

School officials, teachers, fellow students, and Coach Oscar Colón, Ramey's CTE Engineering and Design Teacher celebrated the achievement, congratulating Gabriel, Dante, and Daniella for their outstanding performance. The win not only highlights their individual talents but also positions them as rising stars in the world of coding and cybersecurity.
