Ryukyu Middle School and Bechtel Elementary host a magical day in the library

OKINAWA, JAPAN – For the second consecutive year, Ryukyu Middle School (RYMS) and Bechtel Elementary School (BES) transformed their library into a spellbinding wonderland where students dressed in their favorite wizarding attire or house colors participated in a day brimming with enchanting activities.
The event commenced with students placing their names into the Goblet of Fire, hoping to be drawn for exciting prizes. The library was magically converted into a bewitching scene, featuring activities such as cauldron bubbles, trivia, BINGO, pencil broom crafting, Harry Potter Guess Who, wizard's chess, Pin the Scar on Harry, a gold grab, and more! A photo station with Harry Potter-themed props added to the fun, allowing students to capture magical memories.
“The Harry Potter event was a magical experience that united Ryukyu Middle School and Bechtel Elementary School, allowing students to dive into the enchanting world of J.K. Rowling and bring the wonders of literature to life,” said Ms. Deborah Connolly RYMS. “It was an honor to host this at our school.”
Members of the Ryukyu and Bechtel Parent Teacher Organizations volunteered their time to help run the events, with the middle school yearbook crew supporting as well. The BES Advanced Academic Program and Services specialist, Ms. Jeanene Golden, brought decorations and engaging activities for all students, and both school Educational Technologists, Mr. Eric Ebert and Mr. Robert Sanders, hosted trivia. This occasion was a true collaboration, inspired by Ms. Rayana Windom at Lester Middle School, who hosts a Harry Potter-themed event to open her library each year. Her shared ideas and resources helped make this day a resounding success.
“Libraries are not just about books; they are about creating lifelong learners,” said Andrea Petz RYMS Information Specialist. “Events like these ignite a passion for reading and open up a world of possibilities for young minds.”
Many thanks to Pacific South District Superintendent Dr. Melissa Hayes and Pacific South District Community Superintendent Mr. Craig Maxey for visiting the library and engaging in the activities. The event was a success also because of the support from RYMS Principal Ms. Deborah Connolly and Assistant Principal Mr. Kale Dyer, and BES Principal Mr. Scott Tefft.
Both RYMS and BES, which currently share a building and a library, showcased their strong community spirit and commitment to creating memorable experiences for their students. The magical day in the library was a testament to the power of collaboration and the delight of bringing the wizarding world to life for young minds.
