Brian Durrant Selected as OSHNA School Nurse of the Year

The Overseas School Health Nurses Association (OSHNA) is proud to announce that Brian Durrant has been selected as its 2020 School Nurse of the Year. Brian has been a School Nurse since 2012 and currently works for the Department of Defense Education Activity at Daegu Elementary School in South Korea serving military-connected and Department of Defense dependents. He states, “I find that working with the military-connected students is incredibly rewarding and that by collaborating with the Case Study Committee, Student Support Services and other various committees at my school, I’m able to thoroughly implement my School Health Services Program to support this special student population.”

Brian is active in his school and community, promoting school nursing in a number of ways. He has a leading role on his Continuous School Improvement team serving as the Healthy Culture Chair (2018-2020) and has taken the lead on his Crisis Management Team regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, increasing awareness and educating their population on disease prevention, handwashing, use of personal protective equipment and school illness policy measures. After successfully resuscitating a student in respiratory arrest, Brian coordinated with US Army Garrison Daegu to improve and revise their current base procedures in an effort to mitigate potential loss of life/vitality and improve outcomes when emergency situations.

He is an American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor and has certified 21 staff members. He serves as a career practicum site facilitator for Daegu High School acting as mentor and supervisor for students interested in healthcare/nursing careers. He was also an Internship facilitator for public health and nursing students attending Kyungpook National University (2012, 2017).

Brian served on the OSHNA board as treasurer from June 2016 to May 2019. He also served as a member of the nursing scholarship committee.
