DoDEA Mid-Atlantic District Chief of Staff Is Retiring

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Mid-Atlantic District bids farewell to Mr. Charlie Council, the Mid-Atlantic District Chief of Staff, after 38 years of serving military-connected students.

“I want to thank Mr. Council for impacting the lives of thousands of families through his strong dedication to the well-being of military-connected students,” said Dr. Donato Cuadrado, DoDEA Mid-Atlantic District Superintendent. “His strong advocacy for our kids will be missed. The Mid-Atlantic wishes him the very best.”

Before working for DoDEA in 1982, he taught in the Cumberland County School District in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Mr. Council began his DoDEA career as a 7th grade Science and Language Arts teacher at Irwin Junior High School at Fort Bragg. After holding various teaching positions at Irwin and Albritton Junior High Schools, he became assistant principal at Albritton in 1994. Following that assignment, Mr. Council was named principal of McNair Elementary School in 1999 and then moved to Murray Elementary School in 2006.

In 2011, Mr. Council was appointed the principal of Irwin Intermediate School where he helped plan and facilitate the opening of the replacement building, where Irwin is now located. In 2013, Mr. Council was selected to be the Education Operations Manager for the DoDEA North Carolina District. Since 2015, Mr. Council has served as the Chief of Staff for the Mid-Atlantic District, which includes DoDEA schools in North Carolina, New York, Virginia, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.

Mr. Council earned his Bachelor of Science degree and his Masters of Administration from Pembroke State University.

He retires at the end of July, and Dr. Jacob Sherwood, the DoDEA Puerto Rico community superintendent, will take over as the acting chief of staff.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages Pre-Kindergarten through 12th-grade education programs for school-aged children of Department of Defense personnel who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, Western Asia, the Middle East, Cuba, the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Educational Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
