Grafenwoehr Elementary celebrates opening with ribbon-cutting ceremony

Grafenwoehr, Germany —

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA)- Europe and the entire Grafenwoehr community is celebrating the opening of their new elementary school on Sept. 12 with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The ceremony will include remarks from the Director of DoDEA, Tom Brady, current Principal of Grafenwoehr Elementary School, Michael Defrancesco, senior military leaders and students, and unveiling of the school mascot.

The Army Corps of Engineers started building the school in 2018 and completed with a soft opening in April, 2023.  Grafenwoehr Elementary School costs approximately $37.5 million to build with a capacity of 400 students. The school has ample space with a total square footage of 94,696 transforming the traditional school to a global classroom concept in a two-story building. The school was designed to not only meet but achieve schools silver certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
