Okinawa, Japan —

Department of Defense Education Activity - Pacific Region Director for Student Excellence Ms. Lois Rapp is pleased to announce the selection of Ms. Maricela Guffey as the Pacific Region World Language Instructional System Specialist for grades 6-12. 

Ms. Maricela Guffey began serving as an educator in 2007 in Arizona, before joining DoDEA in 2015 as a World Language Educator in Yokosuka, Japan. Prior to transitioning to the World Language ISS position, Ms. Guffey served as a World Language Department chair at both Yokosuka Middle School and Kinnick High School and facilitated the World Language Focused Collaboration groups for several years.

Ms. Guffey holds a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and Spanish from Grand Canyon University. Her passion for education and for learning new and innovative ways teach and to support students led her to pursue her Masters of Educational Leadership and Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. 

Ms. Guffey is accompanied by her three children, who have all attended DoDEA schools since kindergarten, and her husband, who was a military child and graduate of Edgren High School in Misawa. Having children who have attended elementary through secondary schools overseas has given her insight into the dynamic lives of all DoDEA students and given her a passion for providing them a unified DoDEA World Language program.
