Strait selected as 2021 DoDEA Principal of the Year

2021 POY James Strait

Alexandria, VA —

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) proudly announces Mr. James Strait, Kubasaki High School principal, has been selected as the 2021 DoDEA Principal of the Year.

“James Strait is an extraordinary leader whose ability to bring everyone in the Kubasaki community together in support of students, teachers and excellence in education has had an enormous impact on student achievement and is truly an example for others to follow,” said DoDEA Director Tom Brady.

An Army veteran with 22 years of military service, Strait said it is a privilege to work with military-connected students and their families.

“I look forward to expanding my knowledge as a principal through the many opportunities this honor will bring,” Strait said. “My team of exceptional staff and students, along with my wife and sons, have always encouraged me to go the extra mile – I will do that humbly while serving DODEA. So much gratitude is given to my leadership, current and previous, as well as the outstanding installation leadership and men and women who serve. I will always support the mission through providing a superior education to our students."

Strait has 16 years of experience serving as a school principal and has been the instructional leader at Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan since October 2019. Previously, he served DoDEA students as principal at Ramey Unit School in Puerto Rico. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Bethel University and a master’s degree in Education Administration from Capella University. A lifelong learner, he is currently pursuing a doctorate.

“Mr. Strait is an exemplary school leader who understands the value of building relationships with students, staff, parents, and military leaders to create a school community supportive of academic growth and achievement,” said Lois Rapp, DoDEA Pacific Director for Student Excellence. “During his short time at Kubasaki High School, he has fostered a culture of learning that has left a lasting impact.”

Mr. Jim Journey, DoDEA Pacific South District superintendent, said Strait’s selection as Principal of the Year is a well-deserved honor.

“Mr. Strait’s leadership has helped to revitalize and reinvigorate Kubasaki High School,” Journey said. “He has worked tirelessly with students, staff, and stakeholders to increase the sense of community, pride, and belonging at Kubasaki High School. Mr. Strait’s commitment to students extends beyond the walls of Kubasaki, as he regularly collaborates with other school leaders for the benefit of all students. He has become an integral part of the Pacific South District leadership team.”

Along with the award and recognition, Mr. Strait will compete in the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ National Principal of the Year program, which recognizes outstanding middle and high school principals who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning experiences for students as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.
