What is the DoDEA Seal of Biliteracy Award?

seal of biliteracy consists of an outer teal circle with the words "Seal of Biliteracy" at the top, and the "Department of Defense Education Activity" at the bottom. The inner circle contains half of a world globe with the other half consisting of  two small talk bubbles, a book, and a pen.

The DoDEA Seal of Biliteracy Award is a prestigious academic honor bestowed upon graduating high school students who demonstrate exceptional proficiency in both English and at least one other language. This award celebrates the remarkable achievement of bilingualism and biliteracy. DoDEA will begin awarding the Seal of Biliteracy in the 2025-2026 school year.

  • Career Advantages: Employers in the US and abroad highly value the ability to understand, speak, read, and write fluently in multiple languages, making recipients of this award highly competitive in the global job market.
  • Alignment with US Department of Defense Mission and Priorities: The Seal of Biliteracy supports the US Military Forces’ mission and priorities by recognizing military-connected students that have high levels of language proficiency and literacy in English and in at least another language, including those languages identified as “critical languages” for national security interests. 

Criteria for the DoDEA Seal of Biliteracy Award

Achieving the required proficiency may necessitate taking advanced English and world language courses beyond the standard graduation requirements. To earn the DoDEA Seal of Biliteracy, students must demonstrate:

  • Evidence of Proficiency in English: This can be demonstrated through a proficient score on an English language proficiency assessment, AP English exam, or summative English Language Arts assessment.
  • Evidence of Proficiency in Another Language: Students must also achieve a proficient score on an assessment of one of the languages taught and tested in DoDEA schools.
