Research Requests
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is now accepting research and capstone project requests for review and approval. Please review the guidelines below for submission timelines and processing requirements.
DoDEA will only accept, review and support research studies that meet the criteria for exempt human subjects research per 32 CFR 219 and 45 CFR 46, as applicable. Please work with your advisor and/or the IRB at your institution to ensure your research study will meet human research exemption criteria BEFORE applying for review.Â

Please note that questions related to study design—such as methodology, research design and feasibility, data collection and instrumentation, and analytic methods—should be directed to your faculty advisors or mentors at your respective institutions.

Submission Deadlines and Review Schedules Per DoDEA AI 1304.01
Submissions will be reviewed after the close of each submission window during the following months. Review timelines vary based on the selected pathway. Please plan your submission accordingly to meet your research or capstone project deadlines.

Secondary Data Analysis (Pathway One)
Submit your request by the 15th of the month prior to the review months: February, May, August, and November.
- Review Timeline: 2–3 months (quarterly reviews).

Original Data Collection without Instructional Impact (Pathway Two)
Submit your request by the 15th of the month prior to the quarterly review months: February, May, August, and November.
- Review Timeline: 4–6 months (quarterly reviews).

Data Collection Involving Instructional Impact or Student Participation (Pathway Three)
Submit your request by the 15th of the month prior to the biannual review months: June and December.
- Review Timeline: 6–12 months (biannual reviews).
Note: All requests must be submitted by midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the last day of the submission month listed above to be eligible for review in the subsequent cycle. Late submissions will not be reviewed, and no exceptions will be granted.
Submission Requirements
- Only complete submissions, including all required forms and materials, will be reviewed.
- Incomplete or late submissions will not be processed.
