Education Support Categories and Requirements
0486 - Career Education Coordinator - Other
A minimum of 24 semester hours in the field of career and vocational education or 12 semester hours in the field of career and vocational education with sufficient additional course work to qualify as a teacher of industrial arts, or business, or home economics, or career practicum, is required. Course work must include one course in career/vocational counseling or guidance.
0415 - Assessor (Special Education)
A master’s degree in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in courses such as individual tests and measurements, including interpreting and report results, diagnostic techniques and assessment, adaptive behavior assessment, functional behavioral assessment, collaborative (arena) assessment, developmental task analysis, diagnosis of reading disabilities, assessment and identification of low incidence disabilities and specific learning impairments (specific learning disabilities and intellectual disability), and assessment of young children. A second category is not required.
0414 - Assessor (Speech/Language Pathologist)
Requires a master’s degree in speech/language pathology with course work distributed over at least 4 of the following areas: assessment of young children, assistive technology, augmentative communication, low incidence disabilities which include Autism Spectrum Disorder, selective autism, intellectual disability, aphasia/dysphasia, cleft palate, and traumatic brain injury. Training in basic audiology and speech disorders is required. A second category is not required.
0436 - Elementary - Teacher: English as a Second Language (ESL)
A major in ESL or a minimum of 24 semester hours in ESL is required. Course work should include such courses as applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, comparative cultures, language development, and social psychology of the bilingual child are required. A minimum of 6 semester hours in the theory and methodology of teaching English as a second language is required.
0480 - Elementary - Library Information Specialist
Requires a minimum of 12 semester hours in library/information science distributed over at least four of the following areas: library administration; cataloging and classification; reference; children’s or adolescent literature; collection development; selection of print/non-print materials; current issues and trends in information science; and library automation. Also, requires a minimum of 12 semester hours in technology distributed over at least four of the following areas: computer applications; multimedia/audiovisual production; internet technology; on-line information/services; desktop publishing; network management; distance learning systems; and library automation.
0416 - Elementary - Teacher: Severely Learning Impaired/ Multiple Disabilities
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to severe or multiple disabilities. Typical courses include the following: the nature of intellectual disability, use of adaptive equipment, augmentative communication and equipment, adaptive physical education, and family support.
0420 - Elementary - Teacher: Mildly to Moderately Learning Impaired
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work may include diagnostic-prescriptive type instruction, curriculum based assessment and instruction, remediation activities, educable mentally disabled and behavior disorders.
0423 - Elementary - Teacher: Moderately to Severely Learning Impaired
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to severe and profound disabilities or intellectual disability.
0426 - Elementary - Teacher: Emotionally Impaired
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to emotional impairments or behavior disorders.
0433 - Elementary - Teacher, Advanced Academic Programs and Services Resource - Teacher, Advanced Academic Programs and Services Resource
A major in gifted education or a minimum of 15 semester hours in gifted education. Coursework should include content such as nature and needs of gifted students, identification, differentiation of instruction, curriculum design, and models and strategies for teaching gifted students.
0411 - Language Arts/Reading Specialist (LARS), Elementary - Language Arts/Reading Specialist (LARS) (formerly Reading Improvement Specialist)
A minimum of 24 semester hours in language arts/reading is required. Course work must include teaching of composition (writing process), developmental reading instruction, remediation of reading difficulties, children’s literature and diagnosis and prescription instruction.
0437 - Middle - Teacher: English as a Second Language (ESL)
A major in ESL or a minimum of 24 semester hours in ESL is required. Course work should include such courses as applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, comparative cultures, language development, and social psychology of the bilingual child are required. A minimum of 6 semester hours in the theory and methodology of teaching English as a second language is required.
0461 - Middle - Teacher: Compensatory Education
A minimum of 30 semester hours of professional teacher education course work appropriately distributed in middle and secondary education is required. A minimum of 15 semester hours in math and 24 semester hours in reading, or 24 semester hours in math and 15 semester hours in reading is required.
0481 - Middle - Library Information Specialist
Requires a minimum of 12 semester hours in library/information science distributed over at least four of the following areas: library administration; cataloging and classification; reference; children’s or adolescent literature; collection development; selection of print/non-print materials; current issues and trends in information science; and library automation. Also, requires a minimum of 12 semester hours in technology distributed over at least four of the following areas: computer applications; multimedia/audiovisual production; internet technology; on-line information/services; desktop publishing; network management; distance learning systems; and library automation.
0401 - Middle - Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
Must have completed AVID Implementation Training sponsored by either an AVID Center or DoDEA. Verification that the training has been completed must be provided; this may be a copy of the AVID certificate, 1 semester hour of graduate credit or documentation which verifies that the applicant has attended the minimum 2- or 3-day training session. A second teaching category is required.
0427 - Middle - Teacher: Emotionally Impaired
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to emotional impairments or behavior disorders.

0485 - School Educational Technologist - Other
A major in Instructional Technology or a minimum of 18 semester hours of instructional technology-related course work is required. The 18 semester hours are divided into two general categories – instructional courses and technology courses. Instructional courses must be distributed in at least three of the following instructional areas: instructional design, distance education, integration of technology into curriculum, planning for technology, assessment of technology, technology and special needs, and staff development. Technology courses must be distributed in at least three of the following technology areas: web and/or graphics design, contemporary programming languages, multimedia, digital video, internet in classroom, databases, and local and/or wide area networks in instructional settings.
0438 - Secondary - Teacher: English as a Second Language (ESL)

A major in gifted education or a minimum of 15 semester hours in gifted education. Coursework should include content such as nature and needs of gifted students, identification, differentiation of instruction, curriculum design, and models and strategies for teaching gifted students.
0470 - Teacher, Hearing Impaired (K-12) - Teacher: Compensatory Education
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work should include remedial methods, anatomy of the ear, speech mechanism, methods of auditory training, psychology of the child with disabilities, child development and educational measurement. Sign language proficiency in American Sign Language and/or Signed Exact English is required.
0419 - Teacher, Physically Impaired (Grades PreK-12) - Teacher: Severely Learning Impaired/ Multiple Disabilities
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to physical or multiple disabilities. Typical courses include the following: nature of crippling, special health problems, methods and materials of teaching physically handicapped and educational measurement.
0429 - Teacher, Preschool Children (ages 3-5) with Disabilities - Teacher: Emotionally Impaired
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to preschool or early childhood education.
0472 - Teacher, Speech/Language Pathologist (formerly Communications Impaired Teacher) - Teacher: Compensatory Education
A master’s degree in speech/language pathology is required. Course work should include training in basic audiology and speech disorders. A SLP license issued by a State Board of Health will be only be accepted IF the applicant has completed a SLP internship in a school setting OR they have 7+ years of SLP work experience in a school setting. Otherwise, the Praxis I tests are required OR the applicant must obtain a SLP license issued by a State Board of Education. A second category is not required.
0471 - Teacher, Visually Impaired (K-12) - Teacher: Compensatory Education
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work in the methods of teaching Braille is required. Course work should also include remedial methods, nature and needs of students who are blind, Braille, anatomy and physiology of the eye, orientation and mobility and low vision training.
