Middle School Teacher Categories and Requirements
0210 - Teacher, English (Middle School)
A major in English or a minimum of 24 semester hours in English. A maximum of 5 semester hours in speech and/or journalism may be credited toward meeting this requirement. Course work must include English literature, American literature, the teaching of composition (writing process), and at least 9 upper level semester hours in English.
0230 - Teacher, General Science (Middle School)
A major in general science or a minimum of 24 semester hours in the field of general science. Course work must include a minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level science courses. For teacher of life science and earth science, 9 semester hours are required in the assigned subject.
0234 - Teacher, Health (Middle School)
A major in health or a minimum of 24 semester hours in specific health related course work. Course work must include a minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level health courses.
0212 - Teacher, Journalism (Middle School)
A major in journalism, a minimum of 24 semester hours in journalism or a minimum of 9 semester hours in journalism plus sufficient additional course work in related fields such as communication, speech, or English to total at least 24 semester hours is required. A minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level course work in the field of English, communication arts, speech, or journalism is required.
0240 - Teacher, Mathematics (Middle School)
AÂ minimum of 24 semester hours in mathematics. Course work must include a minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level course work in mathematics. Only math credits earned from a Mathematics Department are acceptable.
0220 - Teacher, Social Studies (Middle School)
A major in social studies or a minimum of 24 semester hours in social studies. Course work must include U.S. history, world history, political science, and physical geography. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in social studies is required. A minimum of 3 semester hours is required in the specific subject area assigned.
0211 - Teacher, Speech (Middle School)
A major in speech, a minimum of 24 semester hours in speech and dramatic arts or a minimum of 9 semester hours in speech plus sufficient additional course work in English to total at least 24 semester hours is required. A minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level course work in the field of English, communication arts, or speech is required.
